ECtHR standards on the protection of whistleblowers: tips for journalists
Whistleblowers are a crucial source of information in journalism. Reporting of misconduct or illegal practices is one of the most important practices which contributes towards holding public and private institutions to account. Many international instruments including the case law of the European Court of Human Rights protects whistleblowers. Yet, in their daily work journalists face practical question such as: is it important to know the motives of the whistleblower; what criteria should be fulfilled by a whistleblower to be entitled to protection; should a whistleblower disclose information firstly within the organisation; what if a whistleblower discloses the information only to the media? This presentation aims to present the standards for the protection of whistleblowers established by the European Court of Human Rights and practical tips for journalists dealing with whistleblowing cases.
